FAQS

Curious about what a Picture Researcher actually does? Here are some answers to the questions I get asked most often.

Why hire a Picture Researcher?
There are probably a lot of common misconceptions around the role of a professional Picture Researcher.

When people first hear the term, they often assume the role simply involves "finding a few images online". In reality, the process is far more complex. Whilst images are everywhere in our modern over-saturated world, high-quality and licensable ones are not. A Picture Researcher ensures that any imagery sourced for a project can be fully cleared for its intended use, taking into account photographic copyright and artistic copyright, as well as any potential third-party rights such as model releases, property rights, trademarks, or estate permissions.
An experienced Picture Researcher understands where best to search for specific (often highly niche) subject matters, drawing on specialist archives, museums, private collections, independent photographers, and an extensive network of industry contacts to uncover rare or previously unseen images.

How can a Picture Researcher help me stay on budget?
A Picture Researcher also plays a key role in managing image budgets responsibly. With a clear understanding of licensing structures and industry standards, they can negotiate fair usage fees on behalf of their clients. Where appropriate, they can also suggest free images from public domain collections to further help keep costs down.

What's your favourite part of the job?

Personally, I love the more creative searches - for example, book cover searches based on an author's or designer's brief. There is something really rewarding about seeing an image you found make its way onto the cover of a novel, knowing that it helps transport thousands of readers into the world of the story. One of my favourite finds was a vintage photograph of a couple on a windswept coastline that reminded the author of her own parents, and resonated with the themes of love and memory in the book.

I also enjoy the archival side of the job, delving into analogue and digital archives to unearth lesser-seen gems.

How do you charge for your work?

My fees are typically based on a day rate or hourly rate, however a per-image rate can also be agreed depending on the scope of the project.

How will generative AI affect the role of a Picture Researcher?

With the rise of AI-generated imagery, the role of a Picture Researcher has already become more important than ever. While AI can create visuals quickly, these images often carry legal and ethical uncertainties around copyright, model likenesses, and originality. A Picture Researcher can help clients find authentic imagery they can trust and use without fear of unintentional copyright infringement.
