ABOUT
Hello, I'm Angelika Pirkl, a London-based freelance Picture Researcher and Art Buyer specialised in history, vintage photography and the arts. I have over ten years' experience in the image licensing industry, working for a diverse client base on editorial and non-editorial projects alike, both in digital and print.
I graduated from the University of Royal Holloway with a Bachelor in European Studies, focused on 20th century history, and also completed a course on Art History from the University of Zaragoza in Spain. I began my career as a Picture Researcher at Lebrecht Music and Arts photo library, during which time I gained a qualification in Picture Research Skills from Central Saint Martins. I later led the picture research team at akg-images fine art & history picture library, before becoming Managing Director of the akg-images London office in 2015. During my time at both picture libraries I have been involved in all stages of the image licensing process, from initial image brief through to fee negotiation and rights clearance. In 2017 I decided to set up Igloo Picture Research to follow my passion of helping clients source those elusive perfect pictures for their projects!
I can deliver picture research for trade publishing, educational publishing and television broadcasting, as well as offer a more creative approach to book cover design and non-editorial projects. With many years' experience in the industry, I can assist with:
-
setting picture budgets;
-
compiling preliminary subject specs;
-
carrying out picture research from a range of sources using local and international picture libraries as well as museums, smaller institutions, private collections and independent photographers;
-
negotiating licensing fees;
-
obtaining necessary rights clearances for photographic copyright as well as additional artistic copyright, publicity rights and property rights if required;
-
keeping accurate records of picture codes, captions, credit lines and license terms.
Projects can be undertaken externally or in-house.
Languages: bilingual English & German, reading knowledge of Spanish & French.
